An Analysis of the Responses of the Isolated Human Vas Deferens to Electrical Stimulation

Abstract
1. Pharmacological analysis of the longitudinal and circular muscle preparations of the isolated human vas deferens to field stimulation has been made.
2. In both preparations field stimulation produced contraction, which was abolished by tetrodotoxin.
3. The contraction of both preparations by field stimulation was abolished by either regitine or guanethidine, and augmented by cocaine.
4. Norepinephrine produced contraction of the longitudinal muscle preparations, which was inhibited by.regitine. The circular muscle preparations reacted with slight tone increase to norepinephrine.
5. ChlorisDndamine inhibited the contraction of the longitudinal muscle to field stimulation, but did not affect that of the circular muscle.
6. The contraction of both preparations by field stimulation was not affectei by physostigmine and atropine. Acetylcholine did nit elicit contraction of other muscle preparations.
7. It is concluded that the, human vas deferens is innervated by the adrenergic nerve and that the adrenergic alpha-receptors are participating with contra tion of the vas.
